back-to-school skin

Nothing is worse than breakouts that seem to be happening for no apparent reason, especially if you are taking care of your skin the best that you can. Who wants to go from a perfectly good skin day to having unexpected zits? Unfortunately, there are a few habits you could be unknowingly doing that can cause unwanted acne to pop up.

Your Cell Phone

There’s no denying that people are basically glued to their smartphones 24/7. With the amount of time spent on our devices, something that goes unnoticed too often is the amount of dirt buildup collecting on our phone screens. This bacteria can easily transfer to your face and cause breakouts around your cheeks, chin, and mouth. Be sure to frequently clean your phone screen with an antibacterial wipe.

The Wrong Sunscreen

First things first—this does NOT mean you should skip out on the sunscreen! The sun’s UV rays are unaffected by cloud coverage or fall’s declining temperatures, causing sunburn or more severe sun damage. However, some sunscreens can clog your pores. Mineral-based sunscreens are usually oil-free and prevent clogged pores that can lead to pesky pimples. At Pure Dermatology, we offer high-quality, dermatologist-recommended sunscreens that are now available in our Pure Apothecary.

Dirty Makeup Brushes

We know you’ve heard this one before, but that’s because it really is that important. There are many benefits to regularly cleaning your makeup brushes. Makeup bristles store bacteria, dirt, and oil, so using your dirty makeup brushes is a recipe for an acne-disaster. We recommend washing your brushes with warm water and gentle shampoo often. It’s easy and worth it.

Stress Overload

Freaking out leads to breakouts, so calm down! Easier said than done, right? Your body responds to stress by sending blood flow and oxygen to areas needed to fight the stress and withdraws from other areas like your skin. This leaves your skin deprived of blood and oxygen, causing it to become dehydrated and prone to clogged pores and breakouts. Manage your stress well by getting enough rest and exercising regularly.

Your Sheets

Get some real beauty rest by frequently washing your sheets. Your sheets may not always appear dirty, but we recommend changing your sheets at least once a week. Bacteria, dirt and oil from the environment and your skin can transfer from your pillow back to your skin.

Dry Airplane Air

Fall is great time for long weekend escape, but you don’t want to arrive at your destination with a post-flight breakout. When you’re on an airplane, the dry air dehydrates your skin. If you have oily skin, your body will start secreting more oil to fight off the dryness. This oil attracts bacteria and leads to, you guessed it, pimples! A good way to ensure you can vacation zit-free is to apply a hydrating serum before your flight, and use a gentle cleanser or exfoliator once you land.

Your Workout Clothes

It’s fairly obvious that not showering off after a workout isn’t good for your skin, but did you know your workout attire could be the cause of your clogged pores? The combination of sweat and friction from your workout clothes can cause your sweat glands to be blocked and result in dreaded bacne and chestne. If you are struggling to get rid of acne in these areas, try switching to more breathable fabrics with a looser fit. Quick-drying fabrics are also great. At the very least, try to change out of your sports bras and other workout gear as soon as possible after exercise.
